Elowah Falls

Overview

Elowah Falls is a hidden favorite among Gorge waterfall fans.  It's an easy stroll into the 300 foot falls; spectacular in the winter and cool and inviting in the summer.  They're far enough off the road to keep the casual tourist from seeing them.  The trail has a few steeper drop offs, so be mindful of this if you want to bring kiddos who will be walking.

Location About 37 miles east of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge
Trailhead amenities zero - have water and take care of toilet stops before you arrive
Hike distance 1.5 miles round trip, 600 feet elevation gain
Stroller friendly? Not really, please carry your small person or have them walk
Driving distance/time  from downtown Portland about 40 miles / 45 minutes
Red tape/Fees None
Getting there Take I-84 eastbound towards Hood River.  Take exit #35, Ainsworth.  Turn left  at the bottom of the exit, and go about 2 miles east on the frontage road next to the freeway.  (Pay attention - the parking lot comes up kind of fast.)  You'll see a large parking lot on your right, just before the frontage road puts you back on the freeway.  Park here.  Try not to miss the lot and find yourself back on I-84 eastbound.  (If you manage to do this, proceed about 6 miles to Bonneville Dam, get back on I-84 westbound, take exit 37, and take two left turns to get back onto the frontage road.)

The trail starts with a steady climb of a few hundred feet, then a left at the fork.  Proceed on mostly level ground for about 1/4 mile, then down some switchbacks into the creek drainage below the falls.  Retrace your steps on the same trail after a snack break at the waterfall.  (There's also a trail that leads to the top of the falls, but it's been cut from a sheer rack face, has a 300 foot sheer drop off, and is highly NOT recommended for kids!)

Depart from trailhead 11:00am sharp
