Ponytail Falls

Overview

Note the hikers behind the falls!

Ponytail Falls is missed by those who peer at Gorge waterfalls from a car window.  A short and moderately steep out and back hike leads to a classic Gorge spot - a trail that goes well behind a waterfall.  Plan on carrying or pushing your smaller kids on the initial steeper 3/4 mile of this hike.  We hike this trail in the autumn, when the fall tree colors are at their peak.  While this trail is wide and well traveled, there are a few significant drop offs /cliffs.   Please keep close track of your child in these areas.

This will primarily be an out and back hike.  If you are feeling more ambitious, you can make it a 2.7 mile round trip loop by continuing on the trail, returning to the Gorge Historic Highway, and walking back about 1/2 mile to your car.

Location 35 miles east of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge
Trailhead amenities zero - have water and take care of toilet stops before you arrive.  There's a toilet about 1 mile east on the frontage road at Ainsworth State park.

Stroller friendly? not really - fairly steep and rocky
Driving distance/time  from downtown Portland about 40 miles / 45 minutes
Red tape/Fees None
Getting there Take I-84 eastbound towards Hood River.  Take exit #35, Ainsworth.  Turn right  at the bottom of the exit, and go about 2 miles west (back towards Portland) along the frontage road.  Park at the large lot for Horsetail Falls.
